Bulgaria: The EC Proposed Bulgaria to Receive EUR 2.2m due to the Floods near Bourgas

The European Commission has proposed Bulgaria to receive 2.2m euros to compensate the damage from last year's floods near Bourgas.

The announcement noted that on 25 and 26 October last year in the region of Bourgas there were heavy storms and torrential rains that caused damages on bridges and roads, schools and hospitals.

EU countries hit by natural disasters may request different types of short-term and long-term assistance. They can trigger the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

States may request assistance from the Solidarity Fund for long-term disaster recovery efforts. With the funds, the European Union can help to recover and cover part of emergency spending, temporary accommodation, cleaning up and preservation of cultural heritage, in order to reduce the financial burden on national authorities alongside natural disasters.

The proposal to provide assistance to Bulgaria must be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council.
