About 16 percent of the working population in Bulgaria over 16 years of age (just over 6 million people), or nearly 960 thousand Bulgarians, had health problems and had a certain discomfort on their daily lives and their lifestyle, according to research data of Eurostat. The analysis looks at the problems that Europeans older than 16 years of age have experienced in their normal daily activities due to various health problems in 2016.

The analysis does not take into account how many Europeans have been registered as people with permanent disabilities and how many of them have experienced only temporary difficulties in their lives due to temporary health problems. The average EU indicator for people with permanent disabilities was 9 percent and for people with moderate and temporary difficulties - 17 percent reported European statistics, reported BTA.

About 12.5 per cent of Bulgarians over 16, or nearly 750,000 Bulgarians, experienced moderate difficulties and discomfort in their personal care and domestic activities. Another nearly 5 percent or about 300 thousand Bulgarians have had severe difficulties due to health problems in their daily activities, according to European statistics.

There is still no accurate data on the number of people with disabilities in our country, but according to data in the NSSI's electronic register, the total number of disability pensions due to a general disease in Bulgaria in 2016 was 456,652 and by April 2018 their number has grown to 457,702 or an increase of 1,050.

According to other recent data of the Center for Public Health Protection and Analyzes - in Bulgaria only in 2016 there were newly registered over 56 thousand Bulgarians with reduced working capacity and with different degrees of disability, which is 9 people per 1000 inhabitants of working population.

In the last few years, the numbers of newly registered disabled people traditionally exceed an average of 60,000 per year, according to NCFPH data. The peak of registered people with varying degrees of disability in Bulgaria was in 2004 - over 133,000 or 20 people per 1000 Bulgarians, and in 2005 - over 115,000 - 17 per 1,000 Bulgarians.
