3.54% of the Bulgarian population or 248 354 people have glaucoma. This is the data, updated at the beginning of March 2018, presented by the Head of the Department of Eye Diseases, Ear, Neck, and Throat Diseases and Oral Surgery Prof. Lachezar Voinov, reported from the Press Center of the Military Medical Academy.

During the lecture, Prof. Voinov, who is also a national ophthalmologist, presented what are the risk factors, the ways of research and treatment. He recalled the maxim "The Glaucoma Takes and Does not Return" and emphasized that the only proven method for early diagnosis of the disease is the preventive examinations.

Globally, by 2013, 64.3 million people were affected by the disease. Estimates are expected to reach 76 million in 2020, and in 2040 to 111.8 million.

MMA conducted a three-day campaign for free preventive examinations, organized in connection with the Global Week for Glaucoma, which benefited dozens of patients, adds from the press center of the medical establishment.
