Bulgaria ranks first in mortality in the EU, shows the latest Eurostat comparative analysis among member states.

In our country was registered is the highest number of deaths per 100,000 people in 2015, which was taken as the basis for the comparison.

In Bulgaria there were 1660 deaths per 100,000 people, with an EU average of 1036 per 100,000.

By 2015, a little over 5.2 million people died in the EU, with 2 million of these deaths (38%) occurring in people aged between 70 and 85, while almost a quarter (24%) of all deaths affect people under the age of 70.

The lowest death rate in the EU Member States is recorded in France - 859 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, Spain (873), Italy (901), Sweden (927) and Luxembourg - 930 per 100 thousand.

At the opposite end of the scale, besides Bulgaria, the other countries with highest mortality rates are Romania - 1530 cases per 100,000, Hungary (1500), Lithuania (1490), Croatia (1430) and Slovakia (1,390 deaths per 100,000 population).

According to the data of our National Statistical Institute (NSI), for 2015, 110 117 people died in Bulgaria, with the highest number of deaths registered are caused by heart diseases - over 70 thousand.

The second cause of death in our country was cancer (17,000), and third is for respiratory diseases (nearly 4,500).

The highest was the death rate in the districts of Vidin (23 per cent) and Montana (22 per cent), and the lowest in Sofia-city and Kardzhali - 12 per cent, and in Varna - 13 per cent.

At the same time, the number of births in Bulgaria has decreased in the last few years - in 2014 they are just over 68 thousand, in 2015 - 66 thousand and in 2016 - 65 thousand.
