Bulgaria: National General Strike in Italy on 8 March

International Women's Day strike to affect Rome public transport and schools

A day-long national general strike is scheduled in Italy on Thursday 8 March - International Women's Day - threatening the country's education and public transport sectors, including air and rail travel.

Backed by Italian trade unions and the Non Una di Meno feminist movement, the strike is aligned with a global call for an end to discrimination against women in the workplace and greater penalties for male violence against women.

In Rome the action is expected to affect buses, trams, metro and light rail services Roma-Lido, Roma-Viterbo and Termini-Centocelle operated by municipal public transport provider ATAC, as well as routes managed by suburban bus company Roma TPL, from 08.30 to 17.00 and from 20.00 until end of service.

Commuters should also expect disruption to Rome's night bus services on the night of 7 March, as well as potential delays with regional rail travel and at both the city's airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino, on 8 March. For full details see transport ministry website.

The disruption to services comes two weeks ahead of a separate strike by ATAC which, if it goes ahead, will affect Rome's public transport services on 22 March.
