TENNIS: SERENA WILLIAMS POWERS TO FINAL
Sports | September 9, 2001, Sunday // 00:00
Serena Williams powered her way into the finals of the U.S. Open on Friday wearing out top-seeded Martina Hingis with huge serves and defeating the No. 1 player in the world, 6-3, 6-2, in 51 minutes. Williams, the 1999 Open champion, will play for the title Saturday night against the winner of Friday`s second semifinal between the No. 2 seed Jennifer Capriati and the No. 4 Venus Williams, the defending champion and Serena`s sister. Hingis, who has maintained her No. 1 world ranking despite not winning a Grand Slam since the 1999 Australian Open, could not keep up with Williams`s hard-hitting game. The loss stretched her slump to 11 Grand Slams since she last won one of the major tournaments. She is 0-6 against top 10 players this year.
