BARTHOLOMEW BACKS REUNION OF BULGARIA`S CHURCH

The world spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said he strongly supports efforts of Bulgaria`s patriarch to mend a rift in the country`s main Orthodox church. The dispute the Bulgarian Orthodox church began a decade ago when dissenting clergy began demanding Bulgaria`s Patriarch Maxim step down, saying he cooperated too closely with the former communist regime. Maxim denied the accusations and has refused to quit, citing a canon that says patriarchs serve for life.
