A girl born in the first minute of the New Year in the Black Sea city of Varna was named Bulgaria's Baby of the Year. After a lot was drawn, little Vessela was selected among the three pretenders born at the very start of 2003. The winning baby became known in Bulgaria as Zhenya since the media stuck to the first name contemplated by her parents. The girl will be crowned and destined by Bulgaria's Football Player of the Year Dimitur Berbatov at a special ceremony on January 19. Little girl Leah from the town of Berkovitsa was named the last baby of 2002. The organizers of the Baby of the Year campaign from the 9 Months magazine received thirty calls on their special hotline on December 31 and January 1. "This year, a lot of girls were born on January 1. An old believe has it that this will bring peace and good crops over the coming year," Dr. Antonia Grigorova from the 9 Months said. According to the magazine's survey, 2002 has brought less drop in birth rates to Bulgaria than previous years. The country has experienced a severe decline in natality for more than a decade. The nationwide campaign "Baby of the Year" takes place for the fourth time namely to stimulate reproductive ideals in Bulgaria.
