72% of Bulgarians want the European Commission to continue with its annual reports on the state of the judicial system in Bulgaria, showed a survey of Eurobarometer ordered by the EC.

According to the survey, this is the percentage of people who want the EU to continue monitoring until “Bulgaria reaches a standard close to that of the rest of the member-states.”

According to 12% of the surveyed, the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) must be abolished gradually over the next few years, 8% want its immediate termination and 8% have no opinion.

Practically, all Bulgarians point out corruption (97%), organised crime (96%) and shortcomings in the judicial system (94%) as serious problems in the country.

In general, Bulgarians reckon that CVM has a positive effect on the judicial system (57%), on combating organised crime (53%) and on dealing with corruption (50%).

According to 28% of Bulgarians, the situation with organised crime hass improved since Bulgaria became a member of the EU. According to 25%, the functioning of the judicial system has improved since 2007 and 17% believe that corruption has been reduced since then.

Optimism, however, is decreasing – in 2012, 38% reckoned that there has been an improvement in terms of combating organised crime, 33% had a positive opinion of the changes in the judicial system and 27% thought that there is less corruption.
