Calcium and phosphorous are essential for dogs and cats. The ratio (Ca:P) is no less important than their amount, which depends on the age and status of the pet. Calcium is essential in the body for many functions including bone formation, blood coagulation, muscle contraction, and nerve impulse transmission. Bones, dairy products, and leguminous plants are rich in calcium, whereas most cereal grains, meat and organ tissues contain small amounts. Phosphorous is required at levels slightly less than calcium. Though phosphorous deficiency occurs very infrequently in dogs and cats, it is useful to know that meat or organ meats are high in phosphorous. Give your pet proper minerals so than the ratio (Ca:P) is correct, i.e. around 1.2 parts of calcium for each 1 part of phosphorous (1.2:1).
