Happiness and democracy are a constant journey and not a one-way street, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said just before the country marked New Year.

In his last speech as Bulgaria's head of state, Plevneliev urged on people to "give way to politicians of moral and dignity" who stand up for principles and universal values.

But he also warned "the world has lost his balance and it will take time until a new, sustainable world order is established in a new, different and multipolar world."

The big question nowadays is "who writes history - the progressive humanity, a symbol to entrepreneurship, innovation and humanism, or retrograde forces and populists armed with ideologies and approaches from the past," he added.

On the tenth anniversary since Bulgaria joined the EU, the country is "entirely dissimilar¨ if compared to what it looked like in 2007. ¨Never until now have Bulgarians been that free and integrated with democratic Europe,¨ he argued.

"Never until now has Bulgaria traded that much with the Balkans and the EU, never until now has the number of tourists been that big."

Plevneliev stated Bulgaria's vision as a reliable NATO and EU member was for a "historic transformation of Bulgaria and the Balkans from a field of interest of great powers into an integral part of united Europe."

"Everyone who moves to isolate Bulgaria within the strictly national confines and works for a weak and divided EU or positions Bulgaria as an unstable, passive and problemati member in the periphery of the EU does not work for the achievement of the national idea."
