Bulgarian PM's Party 'Inclined' to Be in New Govt
Bulgaria's biggest party GERB may join a new government if one is formed within the current legislature, but will not head it, GERB Deputy Chairman Tsvetan Tsvetanov has said.
There is "a possibility" for the party to get involved, Focus News Agency quotes Tsvetanov as saying after a meeting of GERB, the Reformist Bloc (RB) coalition and nationalist alliance Patriotic Front (PF) in Parliament at which party leader and outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has not been present.
"Tomorrow [Tuesday] we will have more clarity on the possibility to form a government," he has told reporters, adding: "There is a clear parliamentary majority for a new government."
Officials from GERB, the RB and the PF - the three parties whose support gave the outgoing government a fragile parliamentary majority in 2014 - have been smoothing out differences on the prospect of having a new cabinet for several days.
The mandate is now in the RB's hands. If the coalition returns it to the President, possibly this week, Bulgaria will slide toward an early election in the spring.
According to initial plans, the mandate was to be handed back on Tuesday if the RB failed to secure enough support fo a new cabinet, but the move might be postponed due to the forthcoming new talks among parties, the Bulgarian National Radio quotes outgoing Health Minister Petar Moskov as explaining.
"The Prime Minister will be selected by the RB, with a consensus from all parliamentary factions that form the majority," Tsvetanov has noted after the meeting.
His words have followed mixed messages from Borisov, who over the course of 24 hours agreed his party should single out the new head of government and then backtracked, leaving the task with the RB leaders.
The RB, a loose coalition of centrist and right-wing parties, is divided over whether new attempts should be formed at making a new cabinet, more than a month after Borisov stepped down.
However, one of its parties, upon taking the mandate, announced it would only seek a government if the Prime Minister came from GERB.
