The number of people whose applications for humanitarian or refugee status were approved in Bulgaria in 2016 is 971, given a total number of over 16,000 applications, announced the Deputy Chairman of the State Agency for Refugees Daniel Indzhiev.
“Most of the people who apply to the Agency have entered illegally. When they are detained, their identity is specified, medical examinations are carried out, so are checks as to whether these people present a risk to the security of the country. The persons who receive protection may move across the country and travel freely. The agency also prepares an integration profile of these persons. On the basis of the profile, they are directed for settlement in Bulgaria,” added Indzhiev.
