Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has deposited his resignation and that of his government, officials say.

An emergency vote is expected in Parliament tomorrow on his move to step down.

Borisov already made the pledge to resign on Sunday evening, after his GERB party's candidate, Tsetska Tsacheva, lost the presidential election to her rival Rumen Radev, backed by the socialist opposition.

"In his letter to [MPs] the Prime Minister declares that the Council of Ministers [government] will continue to perform its functions until the election of a new government and will ensure continuity in the country's governance," the cabinet's press office says.

The Constitution stipulates that a cabinet's mandate is terminated as soon as Parliament accepts its resignation.

The next step, if lawmakers vote "Yes", will be an attempt to form a new government and, in case of failure, another interim cabinet, but no early elections before spring, since the legislature cannot be dissolved by the incumbent President.
