Labor code violations that involve employment of people under 18 are unreasonably many, Krasimir Totkov, executive director of Labor Directorate General (LIG) said. 17,333 labour code violations were detected in the first half of 2001. In July and August the inspectorate made checks in 320 retail, service and public companies in six regions. 52 regulatory violations in the employment of people under 18 were detected. Only in 23 instances, children were hired with the approval of the labor inspectorate. In 10 cases, the children`s working hours exceeded 7 hours per day. 14 under aged persons worked without a contract of employment. People under 18 are allowed to work only with LIG`s permission and after a thorough medical checkup. Under the Labor Code, employers are obliged to hire under aged persons only for jobs with shorter working hours. LIG permitted the employment of 127 children between 15 and 16 and 890 teenagers between 16 and 18 in the first half of 2001.
