Bulgaria: EUR 86 M To Be Allocated for Jeeps, Cameras at Bulgarian Borders BGNES

Only 20% of the EUR 108 M, negotiated by PM Borisov in emergency assistance from the European Commission for dealing with the migrant wave, will be allocated for new detention centres and renovation of the existing ones. The rest of the funds will be used for border defence, explained an EC official to 24 chasa.

Over EUR 86 M will be allocated for the purchase of equipment for border defence. This includes jeeps, video cameras, thermal cameras and other equipment. The financing of the purchase and installation of fences will not be possible since the EC does not officially approve of the erection of fences, explained the Spokesperson for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Tove Ernst.

Up to now, Bulgaria has spent over BGN 150 M for the construction of the fence along the Bulgarian-Turkish border. So far, Bulgaria has submitted three projects for emergency assistance for the total amount of EUR 108 M. The applications for the remaining EUR 52 M have not been filed yet, explained Ernst.

At the end of last week, the Ministry of Foreign affairs announced that they have submitted 5 projects for the total amount of EUR 160 M but Brussels has received only 3 for the total amount of EUR 108 M. This is the reason why, at the meeting in Bratislava, the allocation of EUR 108 M plus EUR 52 M was negotiated and not the full amount of EUR 160 M.

A total of EUR 15 B will be allocated for policies on migration for the period 2014-2020, envisages the review of the European budget proposed by the Vice President of the EC Kristalina Georgieva. Another EUR 3.9 B will allocated for migration and, out of these, EUR 1.4 B will be for projects for the countries where the migrants come from – Syria, Turkey, Lebanon etc.

The remaining EUR 2.5 B will be allocated for the defence of European borders and the creation of asylum possibilities. Next year alone, EUR 1.8 B will allocated for the refugees.
