Ahmed Dogan, the honorary chair of the Movements and Freedoms Party (DPS), could be nominated for President of Bulgaria, the party's current head Mustafa Karadayi has said.

Dogan, a figure of mixed reputation that is still thought to dominate over the DPS, has not officially been at the helm of the party since 2013. However, he intervened to oust the then leader Lyutvi Mestan and accused him of betraying national interest by siding with Ankara in its dispute with Moscow over the downed plane.

"I think Ahmed Dogan would be a good presidential candidate," Karadayi is heard telling journalists in a NOVA TV report.

But he adds that "there are many people in the DPS who meet the criteria... to be potential presidential candidates."

Karadayi has added the DPS is "ready" for elections. The party, however, has not registered with the Central Electoral Commission (CIK) for the upcoming vote that is due on November 06.

Dogan has largely shunned the media since leaving the formal leader's office after being attacked at a party congress in January of 2013 where he was to announce his retirement from active politics.
