As many as 166 irregular migrants have been detained in Bulgaria's capital Sofia, police say.

The foreign nationals in question have presented no identity documents during a police check.

They make up more than half of the 300 people whose documents have been inspected in the past 24 hours.

The operation is still ongoing, according to police authorities.

A surge in the number of specialized operations against irregular migrants has been registered in Sofia and elsewhere. Bulgaria's government claims smuggling activity using the country has a transit destination has been on the rise in the past few weeks.
