Officials Have No Information on Bulgarians Injured During Attempted Coup in Turkey

Following an extraordinary meeting with the heads of the security agencies early on Saturday, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said that there is no information on any Bulgarian citizens injured during the unsuccessful attempt for coup carried out by group within the Turkish military overnight.
The meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov and Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev.
Borisov said that Bulgaria is following the developments in Turkey with anxiety and the institutions are making efforts to take care of all Bulgarians there.
He added that Foreign Minister Mitov had held a conversation with his Turkish counterpart. Similarly, the heads of the security agencies had also held conversations with their Turkish counterparts.
The Bulgarian prime minister expressed hope that the situation in Turkey will be resolved through legal and democratic means.
In his words, the way to depose a government in the democratic world was through elections. He expressed his concern that the world is getting used to hear of tens of people killed every day.
Borisov reminded that the checkpoints on the Bulgarian-Turkish border have been closed from the Turkish side, while border police patrols have been stepped up on the Bulgarian side. The presence of the Bulgarian armed forces has also been heightened along the border, the defence ministry informed.
He assured that Bulgaria has readiness to assist each Bulgarian citizen and advised against travel to Turkey.
In an earlier statement, the foreign ministry had similarly advised Bulgarians to refrain from traveling to Turkey.
Bulgarians already present on the territory of Turkey were asked to stay inside their places of accommodation and to avoid public spaces.
They were advised to register with the “Traveling to” service available on the website of the foreign ministry and to contact the Bulgarian diplomatic missions in Turkey if the need arises.
