Tehran has invited Sofia to take part in a new transport corridor linking the Islamic Republic with Armenia and Georgia and crossing the Black Sea, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has said.
Borisov is leading a Bulgarian ministerial and entrepreneurial delegation to Iran on Monday and Tuesday.
The transport corridor is not only limited to carrying goods, "but even gas", the Bulgarian National Radio quotes him as saying.
Bulgaria's participation could begin "as soon as now" through the infrastructure of the Varna and Burgas ports.
An expert meeting will be held in Sofia bringing together representatives of the four countries, he has added.
The Prime Minister has made his comments after a meeting with Iran's First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri.
He has highlighted energy and tourism as the main issues that have been discussed.
The idea of a transport corridor linking Bulgaria and Iran has been in the air for months, after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the two countries' governments. Reports then suggested the main goal was to bypass Turkey in view of increased terror activity in the country.
On the other highlight of the visit - Bulgaria's effort to find a buyer of a nuclear reactor - Borisov has added that any specifics will be discussed during the meeting of the two countries' energy ministers on Monday afternoon.
