Bulgarian-born artist Christo Javacheff has once again amazed the world with his latest installation Floating Piers, which is on display in Italy’s Lake Iseo between June 18 and July 3.
The installation is made of 100 000 square metres of yellow fabric carried by a modular floating dock system of 220 000 high-density polyethylene cubes.
The installation is just above the surface of the water and floats with the movement of the waves.
Visitors can walk on the Floating Piers which stretch from Sulzano to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. The surrounding mountains offer a bird eye’s view of the installation.
The installation is free and accessible 24/7 depending on the weather. On Sunday, there was no access to San Paolo island.
The length of the walkways in the water is 3 kilometres, with the fabric extending for another 2.5 kilometres along the pedestrian streets of Sulzano and Peschiera Maraglio.
Visitors along the 16-metre-wide walkways can experience what it feels like walking on water. The bright yellow fabric will transform to shades of red and gold by the light and water.
The project was first conceived by Christo and his late wife Jeanne-Claude in 1970. Christo has been working on the project since 2014. This is his first large scale project after the death of Jeanne-Claude in 2009.
Among the couple's famous works of art are the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin and The Gates in Central Park in New York.
