Prospects for enhancing bilateral economic and trade cooperation and Bulgaria-Romania partnership within the EU and NATO have been high on the agenda of Wednesday’s meeting of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov with Romanian President Klaus Johannis.

Security in the region of southeastern Europe and migratory pressure on the EU also were among the topics discussed during the meeting in Sofia on Wednesday, part of Iohannis’ two-day visit.

At the meeting, Borisov expressed Bulgaria’s hope that Romania would complete as soon as possible its part of the project for the construction of a gas interconnection under the Danube river between the two neighbouring countries in order to finalise the project, according to a statement from the government press office in Sofia. 

Borisov and Iohannis agreed that the commissioning of the interconnection will strengthen the gas infrastructure and improve security of supply to the region. 

The preparation of a common position of Sofia and Bucharest on abolition of entry visas for Canada for Bulgarian and Romanian citizens also was among the items on the agenda of the talks between Borisov and Iohannis. 

They also discussed the state of play in boosting cross-border cooperation and security at the external borders of the EU and Schengen Area in the context of the migration crisis in Europe, according to the statement.
