Torrential rainfall and overflowing rivers flooded houses and roads across Bulgaria on Monday.

The village of Dabene in the municipality of Karlovo was the worst affected. After a torrential rain lasting for an hour, the level of river Martvitsa rose by three metres, its burst its banks and flooded nearby houses and streets.

Fifteen houses, yards with agricultural production and streets have been flooded.

Torrential rain fell also on Tuesday morning, but at present the situation is normalising and the level of the river is within the norm.

An inspection is to assess the damages and determine whether affected people will be eligible to compensations.

Houses near the railway station of Karlovo were also flooded on Monday.

Also on Monday, roads throughout the country were flooded after torrential rainfall and hail.

Among the heavily affected towns were Veliko Tarnovo, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Troyan, Razgrad, Sevlievo, Gabrovo, Byala, Ruse, Sliven, Svishtov.

The road Svishtov-Ruse in the section between Vardim and Nov grad is closed for indefinite period of time due to a flooding and landslide. The republican road between Troyan and Shipkovo was also flooded.

Meanwhile, Stara Zagora is still recovering from last week's torrential rainfall which led to the collapse of several houses in one of the neighbourhoods where the level of the water reached up to three metres.

The municipality has started gradual repair of streets and it is expected that everything will be fixed within a month.

On Tuesday, more considerable rainfall coupled with thunder storms and hail is expected in southeastern Bulgaria.

Starting from Wednesday, the weather is forecasted to improve with abrupt rise in temperatures which are expected to reach up to 40 degrees in the next days.
