Cardboard boxes abandoned in front of a bank have been found in the center of Ruse, Bulgaria's sixth-biggest city, triggering alarm among residents, private NOVA TV broadcaster informs.

Police and fire brigade teams have arrived at the site, cordoning off the area.

Residents of a nearby apartment block have been evacuated.

The area in question is around Aleksandrovska Street, between the Central Hall and Zaychar Street.

Local website ruse.topnovini.bg quotes Interior Ministry officials as saying an alert was submitted to emergency hotline 112 around 7:00 local time on Tuesday.

However, there are no reports of a specific threat.

Bomb scares have been common in Bulgaria since the attacks in Brussels on March 22 that left at least 32 people dead and scores injured.
