Bulgaria: Sofia Police Take Ex-Officer Who Barricaded Himself Out of Building BGNES

Police have escorted retired officer Petar Kodzheykov, who had locked himself up in his apartment with his wife, out of their apartment in a neighborhood in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

Petar Kodzheykov, an uncle of the former head of the state agency providing officials' security, Todor Kodzheykov, barricaded himself with his wife in their apartment in Strelbishte, not far from the center of Sofia, on Saturday afternoon. Police arrived at the site later in the afternoon.

Kodzheykov, who according to police illegally owns a gun - after having handed over the one he used at work upon retirement, fired on Saturday morning a shot at an officer trying to talk him out of the building.

Focus News Agency quoted the Interior Ministry's Chief Secretary Georgi Kostov as saying no-one had been injured during the police operation that lasted nearly 20 hours.
