The municipal company operating the public transport in Sofia has proposed to raise the standard ticket price by 60% in a bid to increase the use of prepaid travel cards.

The price of a single travel ticket for buses, trams, trolley buses and metro system is to rise to BGN 1.60 (EUR 0.80) from the current BGN 1.00 as of June 1 under a proposal unveiled by the Sofia Urban Mobility Center at a news conference on Friday.

The price of a voucher ticket for 10 trips is to increase to BGN 12 from BGN 8 at present.

The current prices and tariffs apllied by Sofia Urban Mobility Center can be found here.

The proposed price increase has to be put to the vote at the city parliament to take effect. The prices of travel tickets and cards in Sofia hasn’t been changed since 2009.

There will be no change in the prices of all types of existing travel cards, Sofia Urban Mobility Center Executive Director, Simeon Arnaudov, said at the news conference.

The municipal company also proposed to introduce three new types of prepaid cards. A monthly card combining one surface line and metro wil cost BGN 43 under the proposal.

A three-day card for all lines would cost BGN 10, which is expected to be attractive to people arriving on short business trips or visiting relatives in Sofia. Another three-day travel card for all lines is targeting tourists by offering free access to museums and cultural sites as well as price discounts in some shops.

Single travel tickets are used in 15% of all trips on the territory of Bulgaria’s capital, which is above EU average, according to statistical data of Sofia Urban Mobility Center announced at the news conference.

Travel cards on regular tariff are used in 23% of commuting, while cards on preferential tariffs issued to pensioners, students or disabled people are used in 62%.
