Belgium Released Brussels Attacker Deported Earlier from Turkey, Erdogan Reveals
Turkey deported one of the Brussels attackers and alerted the Belgian authorities about him last year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.
However, Belgium had found no links with terorism of the deportee and released him, Erdogan said at a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Ankara, Turkish news daily Sabah reported on Wednesday.
''The Belgian embassy was notified on July 14, 2015 about the deportation of the attacker, who was later released in Belgium,'' Erdogan said, according to dailysabah.com.
Erdogan said Belgium had been warned that the attacker caught in Turkey's southeastern Gaziantep province in 2015 was a foreign fighter.
"However, despite our warnings that this person is a foreign terrorist fighter, Belgium failed to detect the terrorist links of this person," the Turkish president said, according to Anadolu Agency.
Erdogan didn't mention the attacker by name.
The Belgian authorities have named two of the suicide bombers who carried out deadly attacks in Brussels on Tuesday as brothers Khalid and Brahim el-Bakraoui, Belgian nationals.
A third suspected attacker, identified as Najim Laachraoui by the Belgian authorities, is still on the run.
At least 31 people were killed and 230 injured in the terror attacks on Zaventem Airport and Maelbeek metro station in Brussels on Tuesday, according to the latest updates from Belgian authorities.

If this latest terror attack doesn\'t illustrate that no illegals should be admitted to Europe, at all, then nothing will. Close all borders now. Send them all back to where they came from. This terrorism is and has been allowed to operate covertly right on the door step of the EU Headquarters. I hope Merkel and everyone there at EU Headquarters are quivering in their boots. And it beggars belief that Erdogan deported and warned Belgium and European Security, of this one particular person who is one of many plotting away at our destruction, and nothing was done about it, while the EU Leaders are all pussyfooting around in their ivory towers. Had this been known publicly before the latest attack, there would have been complete outrage at the new agreement with Turkey, to which amounts to nothing less than blackmail and extortion. I mean really, who in their right mind would trust Erdogan and Turkey to be looking after the gate and our house? And it will not do anything to curb the terrorists that are coming in through the backdoor via Turkey. Wake up Europe. The EU is equally a terrorist organisation as any other terrorist cell out there, thanks to blind treasonous unelected bureaucrats making foolish decisions. They cannot be trusted. Time to get rid of Merkel and the EU, and everyone takes back their sovereignty. These \"leaders\" were all asleep at the wheel last week to even entertain the idea of this preposterous agreement, let alone to affirm it. We had Grexit as the first contender which didn\'t eventuate because they were paid off, now there\'s Brexit, Frexit, and everyone in the EU should consider their Exit quite seriously, because the EU has become a useless and dangerous entity. I\'d love to see a Bulexit. Enough of this BS. It\'s high time for action.
