Bulgaria: Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor Says No Extradition Request Submitted from Ukraine

Ukraine has not yet demanded the extradition of Georgi Bliznakov, a Bulgarian national from authorities in Sofia, Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov said on Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday, private broadcaster bTV reported that Kiev would seek the extradition of Georgi Bliznakov on the grounds of alleged “illegal crossing of Ukraine’s border, participation in illegal armed formations and taking part in a war against Ukraine".

Bliznakov was involved last week in the beating of a car driver on Sofia Ring Mall, with video footage, presumably made by the victim's wife, showing the incident.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian Ambassador to Bulgaria Mykola Baltazhy told bTV the case of Bliznakov had triggered action from Ukrainian institutions.

He added Kiev was yet to decide whether to seek extradition or to demand that the Bulgarian national in question be tried under Bulgarian law.

Meanwhile it was reported that a total of five Bulgarians, alongside Bliznakov, have been registered by the Ukrainian non-profit organization called Mirotvorets ("Peacekeeper"), over their alleged involvement in activities of pro-Russian forces in Eastern Ukraine or Crimea.

These include Ivan Yanchoglov (described as "an accomplice to [Donbass] fighters"), Dmitriy Petkov ("an accomplice to terrorists"), Krasimir Dechev [RU] ("foreign mercenary") and Magdalena Tasheva [RU] ("international observer of the 'elections' [sic!] in Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the 'referendum' in the Crimea Authonomous Republic.)

Last year Tasheva, who is an active member and lawmaker from Ataka party, was banned from entering the country along with Bulgarian journalist Elena Yoncheva over national security concerns of Kiev authorities.

Dechev, for his part, is accused of having tried to lie about his stay in Ukraine as a "mercenary" by claiming he was a "correspondent for an unknown publication".
