Russia and Turkey are fighting for control over Bulgaria’s Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) political party "in a proxy battle in their wider conflict", Victor Kotsev writes in an article for Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail published on Friday.
“The fight threatens to destabilize further the European Union’s southern border,” the author says.
The expulsion of a Turkish diplomat from Bulgaria and the subsequent expulsion of a Bulgarian diplomat from Turkey, and the setting up of a an-hoc committee in Bulgaria’s parliament to look into alleged interference of Russia and Turkey into domestic affairs suggest that the Balkan country “is on track to become the latest battleground in a rapidly expanding conflict between the two regional heavyweights”.
