Bautista Agut Triumphs in First Edition of Sofia Open

Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut won the first edition of Garanti Koza Sofia Open which was held in the Bulgarian capital last week.

In the final played on Sunday, first seeded Agut defeated Serbian Viktor Troicki, who was seeded second, with 6:3, 6:4.

The match attracted 8500 spectators in the Arena Armeec hall and lasted one hour and twenty minutes.

In the opening set, Agut came in the lead with 5:3 after achieving a break in the eighth game and went on to win the first set.

In the second set, the Spaniard came ahead 3:1, sustained the lead and claimed the final victory.

This was fourth title for Agut and his second for this season after winning in Auckland in January.

The Spaniard won 250 points for the ranking and and a prize of EUR 82 450, while Troicki earned 150 points and a prize of EUR 43 430.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov presented the trophy to the runner-up, while the champion was awarded by Sports Minister Krasen Kralev.

Agut reached the quarterfinals without playing and in the next three matches he did not concede a single set.

In the doubles final, Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop from the Netherlands defeated Austrian Philipp Oswald and Canadian Adil Shamasdin with 5:7, 7:6 (9), 10:6.

The Dutch winners were awarded by Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.

Although it was held in the week after Australian Open, the tournament in Sofia managed to attract eight players from the ATP Top 50.

The duration of the tournament's contract is for three years with the option for its extension for another two years.
