Bulgaria: Council of Europe 'Could End' Post-Monitoring Dialogue with Bulgaria A handout picture provided by the Council of Europe shows Pedro Agramunt in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, January 25, 2016.

The Council of Europe might choose to drop the post-monitoring dialogue with Bulgaria on the observation of human rights, the newly elected head of CoE's Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) has said.

In his first press briefing after the election, Pedro Agramunt said he would "closely follow" the issue, according to the Bulgarian National Radio.

Agramunt, however, has added it is "up to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe" to decide.

In November 2015, Bulgaria assumed the rotating chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of CoE and will host its next session in May 2016.

Speaking before PACE last week, Bulgarain Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov urged an end to post-monitoring dialogue with Sofia adding Bulgaria was the single European Union member state where the mechanism is still in place.
