Santa Lucia Crowned in Sofia
Society | December 13, 2002, Friday // 00:00
The Bulgarian Queen of Light was crowned by Interior Ministry Chief Secretary General Boyko Borisov on Friday night . Ambassador Ask announced earlier during the week that the winner in the Santa Lucia competition in Bulgaria is Elena Tihomirova from the town of Smolyan. Elena was selected among over 230 beautiful Bulgarian girls across the country. The competition, organized in the same way as in Sweden, preserves a unique Swedish tradition. Santa Lucia, a 4th century Sicilian saint, is celebrated all over Sweden and in Norway on December 13th. People have a special fondness for the saint whose feast day marked the return of the sun and whose name itself means "light."
