National and local budgets, EU funding, and private investment worth BGN 23.5 M is to be put aside for flood prevention in Bulgaria's Black Sea region, the Environment Ministry has announced.

The money sill be sought for the period of 2016-2021.

In a statement published on its website, the ministry has cited a Risk Management Plan it has recently prepared which sets out a total of "116 regions" across the country facing risk of flooding with "a total length of 3889 km".

These are located in different parts of the country, namely the Danube region, the Black Sea region and the areas located not far from Greece's Aegean Sea coastline (some points at the Southern Bulgarian border are located less than 50 km from the Aegean Sea).

Of the areas concerned, 45 are at "substantial risk".

The Risk Management plan comes less than two years after Bulgaria was hit by deadly floods which claimed more than a dozen lives in Varna, the biggest Black Sea city, and elsewhere in the northern part of the country.
