Pets: Fevers

Society | December 13, 2002, Friday // 00:00

All types of warm-blooded animals are subject to fevers, that may be caused by a reaction to infection, environmental factors, physical and emotional activity or problems with the immune system. Fevers may also be the result of an unknown factor and finding the origins of an unknown fever can be difficult. Genetic reasons for the illness may be chronic bacterial infection due to a genetically weak immune system. Pet owners should know that no warm- blooded animal can survive after a temperature of over 108 degrees Fahrenheit (or 42.2 degrees Celsius). If you know how to take a small infant's temperature, you will have no problem with your pet. Obviously, your pet's temperature should never be taken orally (by mouth). The rectal thermometers is the device most commonly used, but it can be stressful for your pet and for you. The digital thermometer that reads the pet's temperature from its ear offers much more comfort, speed and accuracy. Some simple fever remedies are a cool bath. Wrap your pet in a cool towel and give it plenty of water.
