Triple jumper Gabriela Petrova was announced on Tuesday as this year's winner of the Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year award.

This year Petrova won a silver medal in the European Indoors Championship and finished fourth at the World Championships, setting a personal record.

The athlete obtained 1094 points in the poll, leaving behind world and European canoe champion Staniliya Stamenova with 1047 points and captain of the men's national volleyball team Vladimir Nikolov with 793 points.

The men's national volleyball team, which finished fourth at the European championship co-hosted by Bulgaria and Italy, was selected as team of the year, while its coach Plamen Konstantinov was chosen as coach of the year.

Stela Eneva, who won the world championship in shot put, was awarded the best sportsperson with disabilities title.
