The control over exports of potential double-use goods will be of crucial importance for the ratification of the agreement on Bulgaria's NATO entry by the American Congress and the Senate. This was underlined by Elizabeth Jones, Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, at her meeting with Bulgaria's President Parvanov. Elizabeth Jones brought congratulations of U.S. President Bush and State Secretary Colin Powell to the Bulgarian people on being invited to start accession talks with NATO. In her opinion Bulgaria should focus on the Action Plan for NATO entry, work for assuring the supremacy of law, corruption combat and active civil society. President Parvanov expressed gratitude for U.S. support in Bulgaria's preparation for NATO entry and the positive assessment of Bulgaria's missions in peacekeeping operations, including that in Afghanistan. He underlined that the accession of Bulgaria and Romania will strengthen the southern wing of the Alliance. Elizabeth Jones is the highest ranking official of the U.S. State Department to visit Bulgaria over the last three years. During her career in diplomacy, Jones was Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan (1995-98) and Executive Assistant to Secretary of State Warren Christopher (1993-94).
