Bulgaria: Nearly 27,000 Bulgarians Abroad Cast Ballots in Referendum on E-Voting

A total of 26,939 Bulgarian nationals have cast ballots in the country’s referendum on the introduction of remote electronic voting, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia announced on Monday.

Bulgaria held the national referendum alongside local elections on Sunday.

A total of 294 polling stations in 45 countries worldwide were opened for Bulgarian nationals to cast ballots in the referendum. With 98.3% of those ballots counted, 92.06 % of the votes were in favour of the introduction of remote electronic voting, while only 7.94% rejected it.

The introduction of remote electronic voting will give people a choice to use their computer or mobile device to vote, or go to the ballot box.

The greatest number of ballots were cast in the United Kingdom (4,875), including 2,379 in London, the foreign Ministry said.

Germany was second with 3,836 Bulgarian nationals having voted, followed by Spain (3,098), France (1,019), Greece (1,159 and Turkey (222).

There were 3,592 ballots cast by Bulgarian nationals in the United States and 986 in Canada.
