Mini Nobel Prizes in Medicine, Physics Awarded in Bulgaria

The mini Nobel Prize winners for 2002 were announced by Swedish Ambassador to Bulgaria Sten Ask on the Nobel Day December 10. The jury, chaired by distinguished Bulgarian writer Yordan Radichkov, decided to give the unique for Bulgaria awards in medicine, with an emphasis on biotechnology, and in physics, with a stress on information technologies. The laureates - Dragomir Draganov from the Medicine Institute in Pleven and Antoniya Georgieva from the Technical University in Varna, will go on a training trip to Sweden. The initiative is funded by the Swedish companies Ericsson Telecom and Astra Zeneca.

In a separate development Ambassador Ask announced the winner in the Santa Lucia competition in Bulgaria - Elena Tihomirova from the town of Smolyan. Elena was selected among over 230 beautiful Bulgarian girls across the country. She will be crowned the Queen of Light by Interior Ministry Chief Secretary General Boyko Borisov. The competition, organized in the same way as in Sweden, preserves a unique Swedish tradition. Santa Lucia, a 4th century Sicilian saint, is celebrated all over Sweden and in Norway on December 13th. People have a special fondness for the saint whose feast day marked the return of the sun and whose name itself means "light."
