Prosecutors have started an investigation into the deadly pile-up that left 3 people dead and 14 injured (10 seriously) in a tunnel o the Hemus Motorway in Bulgaria.
The tunnel is now open after having been sealed off to traffic from Thursday afternoon to about 02:00 local time (EEST) on Friday.
Boyko Ranovski, head of traffic police, on Friday told public broadcaster BNT the incident was most likely caused by speeding.
Initial reports suggested a truck unexpectedly hit a van from behind after failing to keep distance from it and then drifted left into to the next lane, causing dozens of vehicles in both lanes behind it to collide.
At least 50 vehicles were involved in the incidents, at least 10 of them heavy duty trucks.
Some witnesses say motor oil spilled all around the crash site and a damp road in the Vitinya tunnel might have led to the development. Part of drivers and passengers who were in the tunnel at the time and whose cars were part of the pile-up say they preferred to hit their cars against the tunnel's walls than to collide with other vehicles.
"I don't understand why the more we talk about it... [the more] we want to reach out to more people... a bigger number of people die," Ranovski added.
