The Bulgarian mountaineer Boyan Petrov became on Wednesday the first Bulgarian to have ascended the eighth highest peak in the world – Manaslu in the Himalayas.

The information was announced by the website of the expedition - Seven Summit Treks Manaslu and has not yet been confirmed by Petrov himself, which will be possible only after he reaches the base camp.

Petrov most likely used the last fine day under Manaslu and managed to reach the altitude of 8163 metres with groups of other alpinists who waited for such an opportunity.

Manaslu was the last eight thousander to not have been climbed by a Bulgarian mountaineer, daily Dnevnik informs.

This was the first ascent of an eight thousander after the disastrous earthquake which hit Nepal in April.

This is the fifth eight thousander ascended by Petrov, who has previously climbed K2, Kangchenjunga, Gasherbrum I and Broad Peak

The first eight thousander ascended by a Bulgarian was Lhotse which was climbed by Hristo Prodanov in 1981.

Shortly before the beginning of his expedition, Petrov revealed that he had the idea to climb all fourteen eight thousanders.

His desire to climb two eight thousanders during the current journey failed due to the lack of expeditions.

Several expeditions were cancelled due to strong winds and the danger of avalanches.
