Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry has denied media reports it is looking for two suspected terrorists allegedly linked to Islamic State group, 24 Chasa reported on Sunday.
The information that appeared in Bulgarian media earlier in the day was “wrong interpretation of measures being taken by the Interior Ministry”, the ministry said in a statement, according to the news daily.
The measures that had been subject to wrong interpretation included increased security in the city of Burgas, on the Black Sea coast, relating to the Spirit of Burgas music festival as well as steps directed against illegal migration and circulation of fake identity documents.
Police were reportedly looking for Mimo Popescu, a Romanian national, and Ezida Elham, a French citizen of Iranian descent, 24 Chasa said earlier on Sunday, citing police sources.
The Romanian and French identity cards of the two persons shown on the websites of some media outlets are fake, 24 Chasa quoted the ministry as saying later on Sunday.
The persons and activites cited by the media were connected to suspected criminal activity involving production of fake identity documents, 24 Chasa said.
Bulgarian security agencies are looking for two people allegedly connected to the Islamic State group, bTV station confirmed late on Sunday citing sources.
According to information available to the TV channel, “those people are preachers having come to Bulgaria to recruit fighters for jihad rather than terrorists preparing an attack,” bTV said.
