Bulgaria: Wildfire Near Bulgaria’s Lesovo Border Crossing Contained Bulgarian Mi-17 helicopter taking part in a firefighting operation. Photo credit: mod.bg

A Bulgarian Air Force helicopter has helped contain a wildfire near Lesovo village, a checkpoint on the border with Turkey, the Defence Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Lesovo is not under threat from the flames, according to the head of the Fire Department in Yambol Region Yordan Sabev, Focus news agency reported.

The Mi-17 helicopter has been airborne for nearly three hours on Tuesday morning, pouring over 44 tonnes of water over the blaze which started last night.

Some 400 hectares of grass and bushes have been affected by the fire, Darik radio station quoted police officials as saying.

Seven firefignting trucks, firefighters and volunteers from Lesovo, in southeastern Bulgaria, are taking part in putting the blaze under control.
