More than 40 new wildfires have occurred in Bulgaria over the past 12 hours as a result of hot summer weather, strong winds and human neglect of fire safety rules, BGNES reported on Friday afternoon.
Firefighters, forest guards and volunteers are fighting a blaze that started high up in Rila Mountain around midnight on Thursday. A Bulgarian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter has been used to drop water on the flames since midday Friday to help bring the fire under control.
According to officials of Rila Mountain National Park, the fire has spread on an area of 10 hectares located at a height of over 2,000 metres above the sea level. Rugged terrain with very steep elevetaions is making it quite difficult to fight the blaze, 24 Chasa daily said.
There is no risk to St. Ivan Rilski Monastery located nearby, according to BGNES
A blaze in the region of Haskovo, in southern Bulgaria, has already been contained and firefighters are trying to put it down completely. The fire engulfed about 350 hectares of dry grass and shrubs and some 15 hectares of forest area.
A fire in the area of Fakia village, near Burgas in southeastern Bulgaria, has been extinguished after engulfing about 120 hectares of shrubs and grass.
