The two largest parties represented in the Bulgarian parliament – GERB and BSP failed to reach an agreement on the tabled constitutional amendments.

This became clear after a brief meeting between Bulgarian Prime Minister and leader of the main ruling party (GERB) Boyko Borisov and leader of the largest opposition party (BSP) Mihail Mikov on Wednesday.

Mikov announced that BSP will not change its stance and continues to maintain its opposition to the tabled constitutional amendments, daily Dnevnik informs.

The Socialist leader reminded that back in January, when the strategy on judicial reform had been discussed, BSP warned that the reform should not serve as a justification for constitutional amendments without prior analysis of the existing problems.

Mikov concluded that apparently the opposite approach has been chosen by tabling the constitutional amendments first.

He expressed the readiness of BSP to continue the analysis, including considering possible actions on legislative changes and if necessary constitutional amendments.

PM Borisov admitted that he was misled in believing that a lot of work has been done during the past months, but in reality the ruling majority has only declared its good intentions without presenting serious arguments on the table.

The prime minister was unable to respond to the questions posed by Mikov on how the proposed amendments would solve the existing problems.

Borisov assured that the parliamentary majority will put efforts in addressing the shortcomings concerning the speed and quality of the judicial process before Friday, when MPs are to cast their vote on the constitutional amendments.

One of the parties supporting the coalition government – ABV already announced that it supports only three of the points on the bill, while the second largest opposition party – DPS came out with its alternative proposals on Tuesday.
