Bulgaria: Bulgaria Submitted Only 22 Applications with European Patent Office in 2012

Bulgaria submitted only 22 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO), according to Eurostat data on innovations registered in 2012 in the EU.

According to the report, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), Germany tops the ranking with over 22 000 applications.

According to Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute (NSI), over 22 000 people worked in the research and development sector in that period, including 16 000 researchers, as compared to a total of 16 000 people involved in the R&D sector in 2000, with 10 000 of them researchers.

Other leading countries by European patent applications are France with 8300, the UK with 5100, Italy with 4200, and the Netherlands with 2800.

As regards third countries, the leaders were the US with 28 500 applications and Japan with 22 700, followed by South Korea with 5900 and China with 5500.
