Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has stated prior to a mass meeting in the center of Athens that he will respect the choice of the people at the upcoming referendum.
In case the majority supports the measures proposed by the creditors, he is ready to submit his resignation, Reuters reported.
In his speech at the central Syntagma Square, Tsipras called out to Greek people to vote by marking ‘’No’’ on the upcoming referendum.
The statement came mere hours after the EU creditors warned that if Greece still refuses to impose the necessary stagnation measures, it is likely to fall out of the Eurozone. They noted that this would further aggravate the financial crisis in the country.
Tsipras, in his turn, revoked the possibility for a return of the former drachma currency.
‘’The dignity of the Greek people in the face of blackmail and injustice will send a message of hope and price to all of Europe," he further added, as quoted by the Business Insider.
By the end of the day Tuesday, the Greek government is expected to have transferred a total of EUR 1.6 B. However, according to a government official who made a statement for Reuters, this will not be happening.
Tsipras has stated his readiness to talk to EU leaders, saying that had he received a deal offer on Monday night, Greece would have paid for it on Tuesday, adding that his phone will be on constantly and he will be answering to all calls.
