Romanian nuclear energy company Nuclearelectrica hopes to finalize an agreement on the construction of units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear plant with China General Nuclear Power Corp by end-2015.

The Chinese nuclear power utility was the sole bidder for the tender organized by the Romanian government.

China General Nuclear Power Corp won the tender for the two units of the Cernavoda NPP in October 2014, according to reports of Mediafax, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

The price tag of the project currently stands at around EUR 6.45 B but the feasibility study is to be revised.

The two companies are currently in talks over the Memorandum of Understanding on the project.

According to a media statement of Nuclearelectrica, talks are developing normally and an agreement is expected to be reached by end-2015.

The Cernavoda NPP was designed to include five CANDU-6 units.

The first unit started functioning in 1996 and the second one in August 2007.

The two Canadian-designed units of the N-plant cover around 17-18% of Romania’s energy needs.
