NATO condemned the announcement of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said on Tuesday that the country is planning to boost its nuclear arsenal by forty new intercontinental ballistic missiles.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg accused Russia, saying its move amounted to “”nuclear sabre- rattling”.

Stoltenberg, who was on a visit to the European Commission in Brussels on Tuesday, described the Russian plans as “unjustified, destabilising and dangerous”.

At the same time, he justified the planned deployment of NATO to eastern Europe as “proportionate, defensive and fully in line with international commitments”.

US State Secretary John Kerry also expressed concern over the statement of Putin, saying that the decision was in violation of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties (START).

Russian Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov linked the deployment of the new missiles to the US plans of stationing tanks and F-22 jets in NATO member states in eastern Europe.

Antonov accused the NATO member states of pushing Russia into an arms race.

Putin identified the stationing of a missile defence system by the West as presenting a greater threat compared to the possible deployment of weapons and military personnel in Europe.

The Russian President assured that in case the country is threatened, Moscow will aim its weapons at the countries, where the threat is originating from.

Putin made it clear that NATO was approaching Russian territories and not vice versa.
