Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has praised the decisiveness of the attempts of the Prime Minister and the government to trigger a profound and comprehensive judicial reform, including through changes to the Constitution.

Speaking Friday in Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s head of state underscored that it was obvious that the judiciary was in need of sweeping reforms that would involve constitutional amendments.

He note that changes to the Constitution had to be prepared carefully after a round of public debate and had to be coordinated with all professional organizations.

Bulgaria's President said that he had made it clear last year that he would not hesitate to use his powers to initiate changes to the Constitution, provided that the government, the Parliament, and the political parties failed to reach agreement on the matter.

Plevneliev, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, pointed out that it was the first time that the Bulgarian Prime Minister had stated his intentions to seek changes to the Constitution which would be as far-reaching as necessary.

He welcomed the move, adding that Borisov’s announcement appeared to be more than a political declaration of intentions and that he would be glad to see concrete results of the move.

Plevneliev said that he was glad that the Chief Prosecutor and the Chair of the Supreme Court of Cassation had also spoken in favor of the measure.

“We have the chance to complete a meaningful reform that benefits the people and promotes justice in the country,” Bulgaria’s President said in Plovdiv.
