Bulgaria's top tennis player Grigor Dimitrov suffered a heavy defeat at the quartefinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters tournament.
Dimitrov was defeated with 1:6, 3:6 by Gael Monfils from France in a match that lasted less than an hour, daily Dnevnik reports.
The Bulgarian did not offer a considerable resistance to Monfils, who was aided by the large number of unforced errors and poor service of his opponent.
Dimitrov made 27 unforced errors and missed the two opportunities to achieve a break, while his opponent won a total of four breaks.
Monfils started the match well, achieving a break in the first game and establishing a 2-0 lead after winning the second one.
Dimitrov managed to lower the score to 1-2, but this turned out to be the last game he won in the first set, which ended in less than 25 minutes.
The Bulgarian looked more stable in the beginning of the second set and managed to equalise for 1-1 after Monfils had come in the lead.
The third game proved decisive as this was the moment when Dimitrov could achieve a break and come in the lead for the first time in the match, but the French player defended his service game.
Monfils achieved a break in the next game and came 3-1 in the lead and held the initiative until the end of the match.
Thus he recorded his third victory against the Bulgarian and continues to have not conceded a single set to his opponent.
Dimitrov's only victory against his opponent came after the French player retired as the score was 1:5.
Despite his defeat, the Bulgarian will retain his 11th position in the ATP ranking and will have to redirect his efforts towards the tournament in Istanbul, which begins on April 27.
